Malaysia’s education sector is placing a stronger focus on future-ready teachers through the “Guru Bitara” concept, which has now been highlighted as a major pillar of the National Education Plan (RPM) 2026-2035. That said, what should you know about it?

The country continues adapting its education system for the digital era

For your information, the initiative was shared by Education director-general Datuk Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad on 13 May 2026, as the country continues adapting its education system for the digital era. According to Mohd Azam, the “Guru Bitara” concept is not simply a title for teachers. Instead, it represents educators who combine strong knowledge, teaching skills, emotional balance, and spiritual strength to help shape well-rounded students for the future.

Additionally, the plan also supports Malaysia’s wider push toward digital transformation and stronger soft skills development among students. The RPM 2026-2035, which was launched earlier this year by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, outlines long-term strategies to prepare students not just academically, but also socially and emotionally.

Moreover, Mohd Azam explained that future educators must evolve alongside technology trends such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), especially as students now grow up in a highly connected and borderless digital environment. He also touched on concerns regarding teachers’ workloads. He said ongoing efforts are being made to reduce non-teaching administrative tasks so teachers can focus more on classroom learning and student engagement.

Besides that, school administrators were also reminded not to overemphasise rankings and competitive activities that may affect teachers’ creativity and mental well-being. In conjunction with the 2026 National Teachers’ Day celebration in Perak on 15 May 2026, the Ministry of Education will introduce a unique initiative involving 625 teachers delivering special Friday sermons at mosques across the state.

In addition, the national celebration will also follow the government’s austerity measures while continuing to recognise the importance of teachers in nation-building. While no other details on the news were mentioned, the strong emphasis on AI and digital transformation shows how closely education policy in Malaysia is now tied to technology development and future digital ecosystems.

What do you think about Malaysia’s push toward AI-ready educators and digitally focused classrooms for the next decade?
