Malaysia plans social media restrictions for Under-16s by June 2026

Now, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the measures are expected to be implemented by June or July 2026, pending final review and industry feedback. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is currently running a regulatory sandbox with social media platforms to study existing mechanisms and standardise how age checks are enforced. Unlike other countries, Malaysia is exploring verification approaches that may leverage official identification such as MyKad, reflecting differences in legal and regulatory frameworks.

Authorities have already begun engaging with major social media platforms to refine the implementation approach. Discussions are ongoing, including recent engagements in Singapore, where platforms are reviewing the proposed framework and are expected to submit feedback before final decisions are made. Several platforms have reportedly expressed readiness to comply, signalling early alignment between regulators and industry players.
