It has been a while since we got a report from Opensignal about Malaysia's Mobile Network Experience performance. According to the latest Opensignal Global Network Excellence Index, Malaysia’s mobile network experience slipped two spots, from 36th to 38th globally. Despite the drop, Malaysia still ranks in the top 10 across the Asia?Pacific region.
4G/5G Availability Remains High
Opensignal reports that 4G and 5G availability in Malaysia is very strong, ticking up slightly from 97.7% to 97.9%. While coverage is very good, consistency of quality (measured as “excellent consistent quality”) has declined a bit, from 68.4% to 66.9%.
Speed Trends: 4G Up, 5G Slightly Down
The data shows a notable trend: 4G speeds are improving, while 5G download speeds have dipped slightly. Opensignal recorded 5G speeds falling from 239.9?Mbps to ~237.5?Mbps, while 4G speeds rose from 29.9?Mbps to 32.7?Mbps. Analysts suggest this could be due to operators rebalancing their spectrum, with more 5G devices but lower?band spectrum assignments.
Telcos Spotlight: Who Took Home the Awards?

- Maxis: Continues to excel in reliability, winning the Reliability Experience award with 874 points, ahead of CelcomDigi and Unifi. Maxis also performed strongly in download/upload experience, video, game experience, and latency.
- CelcomDigi: Wins the Consistent Quality award for the first time, achieving 71.7%, pulling ahead of Maxis by four percentage points. This highlights stronger day-to-day stability for demanding applications and real-world usage.
- Unifi: Emerges as a major overall winner. Users enjoy the fastest download speeds in Malaysia — 13% faster than U Mobile. Unifi also leads in Voice App Experience, the only operator scoring in the “Good” (80–87) category. The telco dominated regional performance awards, securing 33 sole wins and 100 shared wins.
- Yes: Leads in overall signal availability, taking home the Time on Network award with a 99% score, meaning users stay connected almost all the time.
- U Mobile: Delivers the best 5G availability in Malaysia, winning outright with 57.8%, outperforming Maxis by six percentage points. This reflects strong growth following its 5G Standalone launch and rapid coverage expansion.
What This Means for Users
While more Malaysians are using 5G-capable devices and plans, Opensignal’s numbers suggest that quality gains are not uniform. The decline in 5G speed might reflect network reallocation by operators or greater usage strain, even as coverage remains broadly available.
Network availability across Malaysia remains high for all major telcos, ensuring users stay connected on both 4G and 5G networks. Consistency and reliability vary by provider, with CelcomDigi excelling in day-to-day usage stability and Maxis leading in dependable connections. Unifi stands out for its download speeds and Voice App Experience, while U Mobile leads in 5G availability.
Overall, Malaysians now have the option to select their mobile provider based on priorities such as speed, coverage, consistency, or reliability. You can read the details more in-depth from Opensignal's report right here. Stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
