Effective from 1 June 2026, the Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has now announced the implementation and enforcement of the Child Protection Code (CPC) and the Risk Reduction Code (RMC), thus banning children under 16 years of age from using social media. So, what should you know about it?

No more new accounts for children

For your information, all children are no longer allowed to register new accounts on social media platforms, including Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and even YouTube. Social platforms need to take appropriate action in enforcing this matter, and verification processes need to be implemented on relevant platforms.

For existing users under the age of 16, the platform must conduct identification, and the relevant account must be given a period of one month to download and transfer their data, including photos and videos, before the account is subject to further action, such as restriction or suspension.

Moreover, this step is taken to continue protecting children from various threats and concerns caused by the use of social platforms. Apart from Malaysia, countries that have started taking similar steps include Australia and Indonesia.
