Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has revealed that our country is aiming to install 10,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging points by 2025. This initiative will be made under the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint.

Currently, Malaysia only has 900 public EV charging points which cater to over 10,000 registered EVs nationwide. According to Bernama, Nik Nazmi said that the key challenge was to make EV practical and irresistible to all levels of society but market forces alone might not be sufficient.

Hence, the minister asserted that there should be appropriate incentives for both consumers and producers to be introduced so as to speed up the transition to or adoption of EVs. Nik Nazmi further elaborated that it would be a disservice to our country if we neglect our potential in EV while neighbouring countries such as Indonesia are racing to excel in the industry. Moreover, Malaysia is already a competitive auto industry player, therefore a transition to EV would only be natural.
