Malaysia will introduce a new generation of national identity cards starting June 2026. So, what should you know about it?
For your information, the National Registration Department (NRD) confirmed that updated versions of the MyKad, MyTentera and MyPoCA will be issued with improved security features, including a built in QR code for faster and more reliable verification. The new rollout is supported by a contract reportedly valued at about RM733 million.
A closer look at what will change
Additionally, the new cards are designed to reduce counterfeiting and strengthen digital verification. The QR code allows government agencies and private institutions to authenticate identity details quickly. The upgrade also comes after various incidents involving forged or misused MyKads in recent years.
Moreover, Malaysia has been working to raise the security level of its identification system. Earlier updates highlighted stronger card materials, laser engraved details, holographic elements and a more secure embedded chip. These additions aim to increase durability and reduce the risk of tampering.
Besides that, the new generation MyKad, MyTentera and MyPoCA will adopt these improvements and add QR based verification to support digital workflows. This may shorten ID checks and strengthen digital identity processes across multiple sectors.
Why it matters for Malaysia
In addition, the rollout supports Malaysia’s push toward better digital identity security. With subsidy misuse and identity fraud cases appearing from time to time, the new system is expected to deliver more reliable verification.
Furthermore, public services, banks, mobile carriers and other sectors that frequently handle identity checks may benefit from the quicker verification steps provided by the QR code system.
