Malaysia is expected to switch from Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) to IPv6 soon. It comes after the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is conducting a Public Consultation on the proposed way forward for 100% adoption and complete migration to IPv6 in Malaysia.

For your information, MCMC said this phased implementation plan aims for a complete transition within four years from 2025 to 2028. Internet Protocol version 4 or IPv4 is the fourth version of the internet protocol which has a length of 32 bits. In general, this version of the IP address has been used since the internet first appeared and began to be used commercially. Therefore, IPv4 can be said to be the version most widely used by most people.

In addition, IPv4 has proven to be no longer sufficient in terms of the capacity to accommodate IP addresses, which is almost 4.3 million IPs only. (The IPv4 space is 2³², or 4,294,967,296) Whereas Internet Protocol version 6 or IPv6 which measures 128 bits will be able to accommodate much more IP addresses.

Moreover, MCMC stated the transition from Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) to IPv6 thus represents significant progress of the Internet as it addresses the limitations and exhaustion of IPv4 due to the exponential increase in connected devices, with the ultimate goal of reaching IPv6 only. Accordingly, MCMC invites feedback and written views from the industry, interested parties and the public on the proposal for 100% adoption and complete migration to IPv6 in Malaysia.
