Malaysia’s telecommunications industry must prepare for a wave of fundamental change driven by rapid global technological evolution, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said, urging telcos to rethink their business structures and embrace new technological paradigms.
Speaking at the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) 2025 Scholarship Awards ceremony in Kuala Lumpur, Fahmi highlighted the shifting landscape that telcos now face. Beyond the traditional challenges posed by social media and mobile connectivity, emerging technologies such as quantum communications, quantum encryption, and satellite communications are expected to reshape the industry over the next five to ten years.
From Traditional Networks to Tech-Driven Models
Fahmi, who is also a spokesperson for the MADANI Government, emphasised that telecommunications companies must shift away from legacy structures toward more technology-driven business models that align with global trends. As an example, he cited Telekom Malaysia’s transformation from a conventional telephone provider into a broader technology company, illustrating how national operators can pivot toward services that extend beyond legacy voice infrastructure.
The minister said such transitions will not only address future communication needs but will also push telcos to innovate in areas including secure communications and advanced network services, reflecting the sector’s ongoing evolution.
Preparing Talent for the Next Generation of Communications
Fahmi also used the event to underscore the importance of nurturing future talent in emerging technology fields. As part of the ceremony, he presented MCMC LEGASI scholarships to five outstanding students and MCMC CARE scholarships to 20 distinguished students, aimed at strengthening Malaysia’s competitiveness in communications and multimedia.
He encouraged young professionals aspiring to join the industry to prioritise mastery of cutting-edge technologies, especially in areas like quantum communications and satellite technology, to ensure their future relevance and competitiveness in a rapidly evolving digital economy.
Expanding Global Engagement Through Education
In addition, Fahmi highlighted ongoing efforts to broaden Malaysia’s global engagement in the telecommunications sector. He revealed that MCMC is working with the Palestinian Embassy to identify candidates for scholarships enabling students from Palestine to pursue studies in network and radio engineering at Malaysian institutions. This initiative reflects both educational collaboration and a broader commitment to developing specialised regional talent in high-demand technical fields.
Looking Ahead
The minister’s remarks come at a time when the global communications landscape is undergoing accelerated change, with technologies such as AI, satellite broadband, quantum computing, and next-generation wireless standards poised to redefine connectivity and digital services. For Malaysia’s telcos, the challenge will be to transform legacy assets into future-ready capabilities, positioning themselves not merely as network providers but as technology companies of the future.
