Social media is still a place that emphasizes free speech, so it might lead to some users exploiting that by posting offensive things on these platforms. With that said, our government might be looking for a way to stop this from happening by studying the need to tighten existing laws.

According to the source, the Communications and Multimedia Ministry wants to have laws to punish those who misuse social media. Although Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 could be used against offenders, it's not so effective when checking contents uploaded on overseas platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter.

If someone uploaded something offensive on the mentioned platforms, the government has no power to take them off. It's also a lengthy process for them to ask the companies for help. Therefore, the ministry is "looking into the possibility of strengthening certain provisions in the existing Act," said Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa.
