On late Sunday, it was announced that all telecommunications companies will officially begin integrating MyDigital ID identity verification into their mobile applications starting today. The nationwide rollout is an initiative by Malaysia’s ongoing cyber defence strategy, aiming to curb scams, identity fraud, and the misuse of unverified SIM cards.

Backed by the National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) and coordinated by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), this initiative ensures every mobile number is linked to a verified digital identity, a move expected to greatly reduce cases of impersonation and fraudulent activities.

Stronger Verification for Existing Prepaid Numbers

Under the new system, users will be able to review all prepaid mobile numbers associated with their MyKad and verify which truly belong to them. This measure directly targets scammers who exploit SIM cards registered under stolen or misused identities. By tightening verification, telcos aim to close one of the most common loopholes used in scam operations.

Mandatory MyDigital ID for New SIM Card Registrations

Beginning with this integration, all new prepaid SIM cards purchased in Malaysia must be verified through the telco’s mobile app using MyDigital ID. This ensures that every new number is activated only by the rightful owner, eliminating attempts to register with another person’s identification details.

NACSA Chief Executive Ir. Dr. Megat Zuhairy Megat Tajuddin noted that the rollout timeline may differ among telcos. Some providers may launch one component initially, while others may implement two or all three. Full adoption is expected to happen progressively.

Secure Single Sign-On for Telco Apps

Another major enhancement is the introduction of Single Sign-On (SSO) with MyDigital ID. Users will be able to log in to their telco apps through MyDigital ID for a more secure authentication experience. This reduces risks of phishing, unauthorised access, and account takeovers by ensuring that logins reference official government-verified identity records held by the National Registration Department.

MyDigital ID: Addressing Scam Calls and Digital Threats

MyDigital ID Chief Executive Officer Nik Hisham Nik Ibrahim highlighted the severity of mobile-related fraud in Malaysia. Scam call cases nearly doubled from 1.63 million in 2023 to 2.98 million in 2024, underscoring the urgent need for stronger digital identity safeguards.

He explained that by using a legitimate digital identity system, Malaysia can significantly reduce such crimes and strengthen trust across digital platforms. With verification tied to official government data, the system prevents misuse while ensuring higher levels of security and privacy.

Privacy: User Data Remains Fully Under User Control

Addressing public concerns about privacy, MyDigital ID emphasised that the platform does not store user data, track activities, or collect new personal information. Its sole role is to confirm a user’s identity only when they choose to log in to a specific service.

All verification processes require user consent, and MyDigital ID does not replace the MyKad system. Instead, it serves as a trusted, secure gateway for online services, enhancing both convenience and protection.

A Stronger, More Secure Digital Future for Malaysians

With telcos now adopting MyDigital ID, Malaysia is poised to create a more resilient digital ecosystem, one where identity theft, fraudulent SIM registrations, and scam operations become significantly harder to execute.

As integrations continue across providers, users are encouraged to visit their telco’s website or app for specific implementation timelines and instructions. Stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
