Malaysians need to be careful of COD "scams" when buying goods on the internet - Ninja Van

In this method, the scammer acts by impersonating a legitimate seller and then arranges for COD delivery through a third-party courier company (3PL) such as Ninja Van. This tactic causes customers to receive packages that were never ordered, or receive items with a lower value than the actual item ordered.

Many customers are deceived by this scam because they are influenced by advertisements that promise high discounts for various products. In order to avoid becoming a victim of a scam, Ninja Van advises the public to verify the seller's identity and always be aware of any unreasonable discount offers.

In the third quarter of 2024, the Klang Valley recorded more than 3,000 cases of fake package deliveries, a 49.22% increase compared to the third quarter of 2023. In a comparison of the same period, the northern and southern regions of Peninsular Malaysia saw a 150% increase in cases while Sabah and Sarawak also increased by 160%.

In addition, customers are reminded not to be deceived by any party impersonating a representative of Ninja Van Malaysia in messaging applications such as WhatsApp.

Here are some simple steps to take to avoid becoming a victim of a scam :

  • Check and verify the seller's identity
  • Ensure website security, URL should have “https://” in front of it
  • Compare prices with other platforms
  • Confirm your delivery details when receiving the item by COD, do not accept the item if the purchase and delivery details are different
  • Be careful with fake package delivery
  • Verify through official channels, such as the official website or app.

We hope that readers will remain alert to various scam risks when shopping on the internet. Hopefully, this will lead to reduced cases. All the best!
