As previously announced, the Malaysian government has begun a QR Code trial period at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 and KLIA Terminal 2. However, it seems that we will need to download a new app for that purpose.

According to the Immigration Department of Malaysia's announcement on its social account, every Malaysian citizen needs to download the new MyBorderPass app just to get through the immigration clearance system at the two terminals. The message is very straightforward, as you will need to register yourself to use the QR code and face authentication.

To recap, the QR code can only be used by Malaysians. According to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, the QR code can be done in five to seven seconds which is a lot faster when compared to the automatic gate methods (usually done from 15 to 25 seconds).  At the moment, the trial run is open at 40 selected lanes in both airports.

To download the new MyBorderPass app, you can do so now on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
