Malaysians spent RM1,735/month on online shopping last year, recording RM707.9 billion total expenditure via e-commerce platforms

It is estimated that Malaysians spent a staggering RM707.9 billion via e-commerce platforms in 2024, equivalent to 36.7% of our country’s gross domestic product (GDP). This is according to Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid, the Chief Economist of Bank Muamalat Malaysia Berhad, as estimated by the latest data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM). 

Dr Mohd Afzanizam was quoted by Sinar Harian as saying after considering the nation’s population, it means that the average Malaysian spent RM1,735 per month or RM57.83 per day on online shopping. 

Furthermore, the percentage for last year was much higher when compared to 10 years ago when expenditure on e-commerce platforms was 16.6% of Malaysia’s GDP. Previously, DOSM asserted that the growth of expenditure on e-commerce platforms among Malaysians increased by 15.4% annually in 2024.
