Today is the deadline day for the 5G service agreement in Malaysia and it seems that the 5G single-wholesale network under Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) may exclude Maxis and U Mobile. This is after both telco companies reportedly say no to taking up stakes in DNB, despite agreeing to the matter back in June 2022.

In a report by Reuters which cites "people familiar with the matter", Maxis and U Mobile allegedly do not see any benefits in being a minority shareholder in DNB. Previously, both companies alongside Celcom and Digi made a counter-offer to the government so that they, the four major telco companies in Malaysia become the majority stakeholder in DNB.

However, that proposal was rejected by the government which up to this day is adamant that the four aforementioned telco companies share a 70% stake in DNB with another two telco players, YTL and Telekom Malaysia. Merdeka Day, which is today is supposed to be the deadline for them to agree on the amount to be paid to gain access to the 5G network.

Despite rejecting the stakes in DNB, the report by Reuters claims that U Mobile and Maxis still want access to DNB’s 5G network. Both companies have allegedly told the government that they want to remain in talks to gain access to the network. As for the other four telcos that agreed to purchase stakes in DNB, it looks like the agreement must be restructured yet again.
