Today, Minister of Communications and Digital Fahmi Fadzil announced some good news. In regards to Malaysia's 5G progress, a Dual Network Implementation Task Force and the Ministry of Communications and Digital have successfully reached an agreement. On top of that, Maxis will also finalise the holding shares process in Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB).
According to Fadzil, Maxis has started the process to sign a 5G access agreement with DNB after several issues related to the matter were finalized on 11 July 2023. With that, Maxis customers will start to enjoy 5G services after the company gets shareholder approval at the Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) next month. One-fifth of the commitment was given previously.
CelcomDigi, Telekom Malaysia. U-Mobile and YTL Communications have already offered 5G services after signing a VG access agreement with DNB last year. Moreover, all the telcos including Maxis are finalising the DNB shares. The next step of this would be the support of developing the 5G network by DNB to reach 80% coverage in populated areas by the end of 2023, before switching to a dual-network model as early as January 2024.
Until 30 June 2023, DNB has developed a VG network infrastructure covering 64.7% coverage in populated areas and is on track to reach the set target. The service provider companies will take all appropriate management actions to complete this process.
The agreement between the two parties is regarding equity participation and a 5G access agreement with DNB. The Dual Network Implementation Task Force was jointly chaired by the YB Datuk Chief Secretary of the Treasury, whereas the YB Datuk Chief Secretary of the Ministry of Communications and Digital was represented.
