In a continuous effort to battle online scams, Maxis has rolled out an integrated artificial intelligence-powered network firewall, designed to combat digital fraud across both voice and SMS traffic. The system has been operational since January 2026 and forms part of the company’s broader multi-layered security framework aimed at delivering safer connectivity for customers.

End-to-End Screening for International Traffic

According to Maxis, the AI-driven firewall screens international SMS and voice traffic entering Malaysia to verify its legitimacy before it reaches users. Equipped with continuous traffic analysis and round-the-clock monitoring, the system is designed to detect and neutralise threats in real time. Maxis also said the enhanced protection operates seamlessly in the background and is provided to customers at no additional cost.

Blocking Spam, Scam Messages and Spoofed Calls

The firewall is engineered to block unwanted SMS content, including spam, international scam messages disguised as local traffic and communications routed through unofficial channels. It also targets fake sender IDs that are commonly used in phishing attempts.

For voice calls, the system strengthens defences against number spoofing by validating caller identities and making it more difficult for scammers to mask their true numbers. Yap Chee Sun, Chief Network Officer at Maxis, said the deployment reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to staying ahead of evolving fraud tactics. He noted that as scams grow more sophisticated, security must remain a continuous and proactive effort.

Building on Existing Network Safeguards

The AI firewall builds upon Maxis’ existing anti-fraud measures. In 2025 alone, the company reported blocking more than half a billion fraudulent calls and SMS attempts, including messages containing malicious links and scam-related keywords. This latest layer is intended to further reduce the risk of scam attempts reaching customers’ devices.

Industry Collaboration and National Efforts

Beyond internal safeguards, Maxis has expanded collaboration across the telecommunications industry. Since late January 2026, the company has implemented inter-operator spoofing checks with four other mobile network operators. These checks validate caller numbers directly with the originating operator to detect masked or falsified identities.

Maxis is also working closely with national enforcement agencies in support of Malaysia’s cybersecurity priorities. In parallel, the company continues to educate customers on emerging scam tactics through its official communication channels and digital platforms.
