Maxis shortlists IoT Challenge and eKelas drama competition winners

Just last June, Maxis held an “Innovate our Tomorrow” (IoT) Challenge and gotten good responses from Penang, Kuching and Kuala Lumpur. Partnering with Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), The Challenge is the first of the many joint initiatives and designed to promote the ecosystem development of IoT solutions. Also, their eKelas programme had a drama competition but we will get to that later below. 

A total of 20 potential winners have been shortlisted and will now be invited to a technical workshop, where they will collect their IoT Challenge Kit to create their respective prototypes. The categories that made it to the shortlist are:

  • Smart Cities: 9 finalists
    - Traffic monitoring and management
    - Saving lives with IoT assisted emergency response
    - Modernised disaster management
  • Smart Manufacturing: 4 finalists
    - Condition monitoring and predictive maintenance
    - Asset tracking for logistics management
  • Smart Agriculture: 7 finalists
    - Plantation worker and harvester productivity tracking
    - Heavy machinery monitoring
    - Yield impact with precision agriculture

The top three winners will get cash prizes of RM15,000, RM10,000 and RM5,000 respectively, and a potential seed funding of up to RM100,000 as well as mentoring support for promising pitches. The final round will be held in August, where the finalist will pitch their prototypes to a panel of judges.

Meanwhile, Maxis has also been fostering students from its eKelas programme, particularly at Pusat Internet Kampung Taee. John Mackwin, a Form Two student from Kg Taee, Serian, Kuching, is just one of the many students won first place for the overall Form 2 students in the eKelas drama competition which saw participation from over 400 students from 72 participating Pusat Internet.

Currently, there are 72 Pusat Internet located across 10 states in Malaysia, with over 10,000 students connecting through the programme via the eKelas portal, as well as 21 Pusat Internet located in Kuching, Miri and Sibu.
