MediaTek Helio G36 chipset announced for budget gaming phones?

MediaTek has officially announced their new Helio G36 chipset. Positioned between the G35 and G37, the G36’s key features include support for fast 90Hz displays, 50MP camera sensors, Dual 4G VoLTE and the MediaTek HyperEngine 2.0 Lite.

In their own words, the G36 is designed for the “Level Up Entry Gaming Smartphone”. To us, this seems a bit of an oxymoron because you usually don’t use entry-level devices for gaming but the G36 will offer 8 Cortex-A53 cores going at 2.2GHz with an IMG PowerVR GE8320 GPU.

The chipset will be based on the TSMC 12nm fabrication process and support FHD+ displays with the aforementioned 90Hz refresh rate. On top of the 50MP camera sensor, it can also support dual 13MP cameras that can record 1080p videos at 30fps.

Considering the state of our 4G networks, we don’t see how this would translate well for gaming, but it could be for other markets like India. No smartphone brands or Malaysia release dates were mentioned but we expect Poco or realme might come out with an entry-level gaming phone powered by the G36 for perhaps RM599 or so.

Would you buy an entry-level gaming smartphone? We might if it came with great cooling / shoulder buttons / gaming features, but what do you think? Let us know in the comments below and stay tuned to TechNave.com
