MediaTek has unveiled its latest mid-tier mobile chipset, the Dimensity 1080 which offers better performance, efficiency and imaging capabilities compared to its predecessor the Dimensity 920. The chipset supports 5G connectivity too and will be powering devices as early as the end of 2022.

As reported by GSMArena, the Dimensity 1080 features two Cortex-A78 performance cores clocked at 2.6GHz, with the Mali-G68 still being retained as its GPU. Moreover, the chipset is built on a 6nm process, similar to the Dimensity 920.

The new mid-tier chipset also has new gaming-specific features such as HyperEngine 3.0, which would help in running mobile games better. In terms of connectivity, the SoC supports sub-6Ghz 5G networks, WiFi 6 and has the same AI Processing Unit (APU) as the Dimensity 920.

Besides that, the chipset has better imaging capabilities, including the ability to handle image data from sensors up to 200MP with the Imagiq ISP. Moreover, there’s also hardware-accelerated HDR video at up to 4K resolution.
