MediaTek further expands its dominance in the world of chip manufacturing by introducing the Kompanio 540, a new chipset developed specifically for Chromebook laptops for student and casual use. That said, what should you know about it?
Better power efficiency than the Kompanio 520
Unlike the Dimensity and Helio series used in Android smartphones, the Kompanio 540 focuses on a balance between high performance and energy efficiency, with the main goal of ensuring all-day battery life. According to MediaTek, this chip offers up to 35% better power efficiency than the Kompanio 520.
The Kompanio 540 comes with an octa-core processor based on a 2+6 configuration consisting of two high-performance Cortex-A78 cores (2.6GHz) and six energy-efficient Cortex-A55 cores (2.0GHz). It is also equipped with a Mali-G57 MC2 GPU that supports a 4K display at 60Hz or two 2.5K screens simultaneously when connected to an external monitor.
For wireless connectivity, the Kompanio 540 supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0 and Bluetooth Low Energy (LE). MediaTek also offers flexibility in storage and memory options with support for LPDDR5-6400 and LPDDR4x-4266 RAM and faster eMMC 5.1 or UFS 3.1 storage options.
The chipset will be rolled out in Chromebooks starting January 2026
Additionally, it supports USB 3.2 Gen 2 and PCIe Gen 2 for connecting accessories and additional devices. MediaTek confirmed that the Kompanio 540 will be used in consumer Chromebooks starting January 2026 and indirectly marks the entry of a new generation of Chromebooks that are more efficient, powerful and flexible for the modern world of education.
