The process node for a chipset is a huge factor in its performance and efficiency. This is why 5nm chipsets are more powerful than 7nm ones. Now that you have some context, you'll know why MediaTek's plan for a 4nm chipset is big for the company.

According to Yesky (via GSMArena), TSMC is ready to launch a trial production for MediaTek's 4nm chipsets in 2H 2021. If there are no major delays, mass production would begin in 2022 or as early as Q4 2021. Allegedly, some smartphone companies have already put down orders for the new 4nm chipset to be produced.

This is flagship chipset is expected to be on par with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 series. Considering the production timeline, it's likely aiming to challenge the Snapdragon 895 (or whatever name it might be) chipset later this year. The tech advancement isn't without cost though, as it was said that MediaTek had to pay around USD 80 (~RM330) per unit compared to the usual USD 30-35 (~RM124-144) for 5nm chipsets.

As you can tell, phones with this chipset could be very powerful but equally as expensive. If this MediaTek chipset outperforms the next-gen flagship Snapdragon chipset, would you choose to go for phones powered by it? Let us know in the comments, and stay tuned to TechNave for more news like this.
