MediaTek is taking a huge leap for its upcoming mid-range products. According to the latest information, the semiconductor company is gearing to launch a new G-series chipset by mid-2022. The new mid-range offering will be the successor of last year's Helio G96, which is a dated 12nm chip.

MediaTek is referring to the chip as "Next-G". Instead of a 12nm process, the company will employ a 6nm one this time, which is a significant change. Reports say it'll have the same CPU configuration as the Helio G96, comprising two ARM Cortex-A76 CPU cores running at 2.05GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores operating at a maximum frequency of 2.0GHz. There will also be the same Mali G57 MC2 GPU for graphics performance.

Although it might sound like the new chip is not that different compared to the Helio G96, it will still bring improved power efficiency thanks to the 6nm architecture. Furthermore, it also supports up to 108MP cameras with 2K video recording at 30fps and can handle HD+ displays with a 120Hz refresh rate. However, the saddest part is that it'll lack 5G connectivity.
