Meta introduces age verification tests to Facebook Dating

Meta has announced that it is currently testing age verification tools on Facebook Dating, the dating feature on its Facebook app. The move was made so as to make the platform safer, more age-appropriate and to ensure that all users are 18 years old and above.

In an official blog post yesterday (5 December 2022), Meta said that it is testing two approaches to verifying users’ age. The first approach is through video selfies, whereby through a partnership with digital identity company Yoti, Facebook Dating can gauge the estimated age of the user.

If your face doesn’t really match your age, then worry not as the second verification test involves users uploading a form of identification card, driving license or anything similar for age verification. Meta stressed that the tests would be done through encryption and will be securely stored, saying that it “won’t be visible” on users’ Facebook profiles or to other people on the app.
