Social media giant Meta is currently in the final stages of obtaining a Service Provider (ASP) Class License in Malaysia. So, what should you know about it?
For your information, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the parent company of Facebook and Instagram was preparing documentation to meet special legal requirements as part of the licensing process. He said:
"Meta is in the final process of submitting some documents."
Moreover, Fahmi said other platform providers such as Google and X are undergoing assessments to ensure their compliance status. Although Google claims they are not a social media platform, the ministry maintains that some parts of YouTube under Google, such as YouTube Shorts, function like social media, similar to TikTok.
In addition, the Communications Minister said discussions were also underway with Microsoft, which owns LinkedIn, following reports showing that the Malaysian user base on the platform could exceed eight million in the first quarter of 2025. Meanwhile, he also stressed the government's commitment to enforce licensing for platforms that exceed the set user threshold, while balancing regulation with freedom of expression and ensuring online safety.
