Meta is reportedly planning to launch a new social media platform to compete with Twitter, codenamed “Project 92”. Based on internal documents, the name for the platform could be “Threads”.

As reported by The Verge which saw the internal documents, one of Meta’s top executives, Chris Cox, showed employees a preview of the platform’s app during a company-wide meeting recently.

The report added that the standalone app would be based on Instagram and integrate with ActivityPub, the decentralised social media protocol. Cox dubbed the app Meta’s “response to Twitter” and will use Instagram’s account system to automatically populate a user’s information.

Besides that, Meta has also reportedly contacted several celebrities and public figures such as Oprah and Dalai Lama to ‘headline’ the app. However, there’s no word on when the app would launch, though it is alleged that its coding will start in January.
