Meta has launched new tools on Facebook, Messenger and WhatsApp to help protect users from fraud. That said, what should you know about it?
A new feature for early warning and preventions
According to Meta, the new feature is designed to provide early warnings to users. For example, WhatsApp users will now receive warning notifications when there are behavioural signals for suspicious device link requests.
Meta says this warning will show WhatsApp users where the suspicious request is coming from, and warn them that it may be a scam. This way, it gives users a chance to re-evaluate the request before accepting it. A similar warning is also being tested for suspicious friend requests on Facebook.
Moreover, it will appear when Facebook users send or receive requests from accounts that show signs of suspicious activity, such as having few mutual friends or being registered in another country. The goal is to help Facebook users make more informed decisions before accepting, rejecting or blocking suspicious requests. Additionally, Meta is expanding more advanced fraud detection features on Messenger to more countries.
When a conversation with a new contact contains common scam patterns such as suspicious job offers, users will be alerted and can choose to share recent chat messages for fraud checks using artificial intelligence (AI). If the system detects potential fraud, the tool will suggest that users block or report the account.
