In an era with brands that love copying others, when is something not worth copying? Obviously, the answer is likely "when it's not profitable". For Meta, it dropped a planned headset like a hot potato.
According to The Information (via Android Authority), Meta has cancelled its mixed-reality (XR) headset due to pricing constraints. Given the internal codename 'La Jolla', the headset was supposed to launch sometime in 2027. Meta planned to retail the headset's price to USD1000 (~RM4347), which means its per unit production cost would have to be much lower to ensure profit.
It's reported that Meta wanted to equip the headset with high-res micro OLED displays (for the lenses). If Meta achieved its target price range, it could severely undercut the Apple Vision Pro, which retails for a whopping USD 3500 (~RM15211). This extremely high pricing is why the Vision Pro isn't selling well, and it seems Meta is not keen to sink money into a product that's likely to fail.
On that topic, how much would you pay for an XR headset? And what functionalities would it need to have to justify its purchase? Share your thoughts in the comments and stay tuned to TechNave for more news like this.
