Meta reportedly offered ~RM470 Million bonuses to poach OpenAI engineers

Meta is making bold moves in the artificial intelligence (AI) talent race. According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Meta has reportedly offered signing bonuses of up to RM470 million (approximately USD100 million) to lure top OpenAI engineers.

The revelation came during a recent podcast interview, where Altman claimed that Meta is aggressively trying to recruit staff from OpenAI, particularly for its growing “superintelligence” division.

What’s going on?

Altman described Meta’s recruitment efforts as unusually intense, stating the company is “making giant offers to a lot of people” within OpenAI. These offers are believed to be part of Meta’s wider efforts to catch up in the AI race by building out its advanced AI and AGI (artificial general intelligence) teams.

Despite the huge financial incentives, none of OpenAI’s top employees have left, Altman said. He suggested that the team’s belief in OpenAI’s long-term vision and mission remains strong, even in the face of extraordinary external offers.

This comes just months after Meta announced its new AI research initiative and appointed Alexandr Wang, former CEO of Scale AI, to lead the company’s push into advanced AI. Meta also made headlines earlier this year by investing more than USD14 billion (about RM66 billion) into AI development.
