
Recently, Meta was ordered by a New Mexico court to pay a USD375 million (~RM1.5 billion) penalty for misleading users about child safety on its Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp platforms. That said, what should you know about it?
This is the first time Meta has been fined over child safety issues
For your information, a jury found Meta liable for endangering children and exposing them to sexual material and contact with sexual predators. It was the first time a state in the United States had successfully sued Meta over child safety issues.
Moreover, Meta and Google were found liable for causing social media addiction by a court in California. The USD375 million (~RM1.5 billion) fine was reached after accounting for thousands of violations, each of which could result in a USD5000 (~RM20000) fine.
Furthermore, Meta denies the allegations and plans to appeal, saying it has worked hard to protect teenage users online.
