According to Samsung, the metal-body Samsung Galaxy Alpha was originally based on the Samsung Card Phone or SGH-P310 partly for it's thinness and partly for it's grip. The curved corners on the Galaxy Alpha were actually designed that way to minimize shock from a drop as smartphones usually fall on the corners when dropped.
