This month, Microsoft has officially retired the once popular internet voice, video and chat service, Skype. The change will affect both free and paid users of Skype, though Skype for Business will remain unaffected.
In preparation for the shutdown, users are encouraged to migrate to Microsoft Teams Free, which offers similar core features along with added functionalities. Users can sign in to Teams Free using their Skype credentials, and their contacts and chat history will be automatically transferred. A notification within the Skype app will guide users through the migration process.
Those who prefer not to switch to Teams Free have the option to export their Skype data before the platform is shut down. Additionally, access to the Skype Dial Pad will be limited to remaining paid users via the Skype web portal and within Microsoft Teams Free. Users wishing to transfer their Skype Numbers are advised to contact their new carrier or visit Microsoft’s support site for more information.
Lastly, Skype will stop offering paid features to new customers, including Skype Credit and subscriptions for domestic and international calling. It was happy to know you, Skype. So long and goodbye.
