It has been a long time coming but the Motorola Moto X finally gets it's official launch and despite all the leaked photos, tech specs and features, it still manages to hold a couple of surprises in store for us. For now, lets confirm rumours as the edge-to-edge Magic Glass screen is there along with other tech specs like:

  • 1.7GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU (Motorola X8 Mobile Computing system)
  • Adreno 320 quad-core GPU
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB / 32GB storage
  • 4.7-inch RGB AMOLED screen (720 x 1280 pixels, 316 ppi)
  • 10MP rear camera (ClearPixel, LED Flash) + 2MP front camera
  • 130g
  • 2200 mAh
  • Supports 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.0 LE + EDR, WiFi a/g/b/n/ac
  • Android 4.2.2

That all comes up to $199.99 (RM651) for the 16GB version on a 2 year contract with a US carrier like AT&T, which is quite high all things considered. It is expected to be released on 23 August 2013. However, the extra surprises should provide a little bit more incentive:

  • 10MP ClearPixel camera allows for better light absorption. Much like the UltraPixel cameras from HTC, this means a better working smartphone camera under low-light conditions (and 10MP is definitely higher than 4MP)
  • Customize everything with the Moto Maker through online purchasing which allows you to select 18 backplate colours, 2 front colours, 7 accent colours, a custom message on the back and a customized boot-up message.
  • Always-on Voice Commands. Much like the Google Glass, the Moto X will always be listening so when you say "OK, Google Now" followed by a command it will do so, no buttons or gestures required.
  • Active Display which only turns on certain parts or pixels of the screen for notifications. This allows the Moto X to be more energy efficient.

Other features include stuff like a Quick Capture camera and perhaps more software features to come. In related news, while the Motorola Moto X was designed with price in mind, the good folks at Motorola realised that it is still a bit pricey for most people. As such, they will be releasing a low-cost version targeting emerging markets like Malaysia that don't buy smartphones on contracts. No exact dates when it would be released but many are expecting it to come by the end of 2013.
