Since the advent of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology, various creative tasks have become easier, especially in producing digital images. However, there are those who use this technology to produce the faces of people who have died as one way of expressing sadness and longing. So, what should you know about it?
In terms of the law, is it allowed in Islam? To answer the question, the Mufti of the Federal Territory has given an explanation. Simply put, the law of producing images of deceased people using generative AI technology takes the same approach as the law of drawing a picture. The law of drawing pictures of people who are alive or who have died without a purpose and a reasonable reason is haram according to the majority of scholars.
Even so, the production of digital images for the purpose of preaching and learning is not included in the prohibited matters. This is because it leads to benefits and could be classified as a necessity in daily life. If the drawings and pictures are incomplete (only showing parts of the body) such as the head, arms and so forth, then, it is permissible to use such AI images.
Therefore, the production of images of deceased people using generative AI technology must meet the following conditions :
- The resulting image is not a perfect image of all body parts.
- Does not display private parts or anything that contradicts the Sharia.
- Does not insult the picture of the deceased.
- Does not make the picture of the person who has died move because it is feared that it will degrade or embarrass him.
- The purpose of the picture is made is only for good purposes.
The Mufti also advised the public to be careful in using the technology that is available. Uncontrolled use of technology will have bad effects on individuals, society and the country.
