With AI-generated content being the rage recently, including the new OpenAI's Sora text-to-video model, the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) had their say on such content. Its chairman, Dr Mohd Zuhan Mohd Zain stressed that AI-generated content is a violation if it resembles works registered under intellectual property in Malaysia.

As reported by Bernama, Dr Mohd Zuhan clarified that all intellectual property in Malaysia is protected under the Trademarks Act 2019, the Patents Act 1983, the Copyright Act 1987 and the Industrial Designs Act 1996. The MyIPO Chairman gave the example of AI-generated song lyrics being an infringement, should the lyrics already be registered under copyright by a publisher.

Accordingly, MyIPO will address issues related to SOPs for the use of AI at the upcoming World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) conference in Geneva in July. Besides that, MyIPO will also be involved in the establishment of the First National Artificial Intelligence Learning Centre through the AI Faculty at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
