Recently, our country’s contact tracing app, MySejahtera has been embroiled in controversy over its ownership. This is after the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) questioned the takeover of the app my MySJ Bhd from KPISoft Malaysia Sdn Bhd, which developed the app without a contract with the Malaysian government.

Despite Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin reassuring Malaysians on Monday that the app is owned by the government and that users' personal data are safe, it seems that many are still sceptical. This can be seen by the 26% drop in daily MySejahtera check-ins on 28 March 2022.

According to a report by CodeBlue which sourced from MySejahtera's GitHub data  provided by the Health Ministry, the app saw its lowest check-ins this year on 28 March. In fact, it saw over 6.3 million drop on 28 March (18038569 check-ins) compared to just 3 days earlier on 25 March (24358225 check-ins).

Furthermore, although MySejahtera saw the lowest ever daily check-ins last Monday, its trend has actually been on a general decline since the start of the year. Most recently, the data showed 17.2% decline from an average of 24.29 million daily MySejahtera check-ins during the week between March 19 and March 25, to 20.1 million check-ins on March 26.

On 27 March, check-ins dropped again to 19.2 million before recording the lowest total for the year on 28 March, as mentioned before. Well, that is quite a drastic decline and comes at an interesting time too, as many quarters are now proposing for check-in practices to stop.

Previously, we reported how the Malaysian Medical Association claimed that check-in with QR code is no longer helpful. Moreover, its president, Dr Koh Kar Chai, also said that it might be time to consider taking down the feature from the MySejahtera app.

Khairy himself concurred with the sentiment to a certain extent, saying that check-ins through MySejahtera would end soon if the Covid-19 situation don’t get worse. As reported by Malaysiakini, he further said that the process to decide on the matter may take a few weeks after Malaysia officially enters the endemic phase on 1 April.
