5G coverage hasn't increased as fast as some have hoped, but there's definitely progress for Malaysia. As a reminder, the government plans to have DNB's 5G network reach 80% coverage of populated areas by the end of the year. Recently, a few notable updates have been reported.

At the end of April 2023, DNB managed to provide 5G coverage to 59.5% of populated areas in Malaysia. This was confirmed by Fahmi Fadzil, who attended the recent World Telecommunication and Information Society Day celebration. The Communications and Multimedia Minister also mentioned that only 34% of Sarawak is covered. As such, he urged the Sarawak state government to coordinate with MCMC to improve 5G coverage in the state.

In related news, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid said that the government will ensure that those who live in rural communities won't be marginalised from 5G coverage. While highly populated areas have higher coverage of an estimated 64%, rural areas are not given the same treatment. Mind you, the exact coverage percentage for rural communities was not mentioned, but the figure could be reported in the future.

From what we can gather, Malaysia is well on its way to widespread 5G coverage by the end of 2023. Of course, whether you should upgrade to 5G or not depends on what local telcos can offer.
