Last week, Nepal was rocked by riots by the people against corruption in the government led by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Recently, the country appointed its acting Prime Minister through Discord. So, what should you know about it?

What’s happening in Nepal?

For your information, the Nepalese government tried to quell the public opposition by banning social media platforms, which only resulted in the riots, labelled the Gen-Z Revolution, escalating and the KP Sharma Oli government being toppled.

With the country's leadership vacant, Sushila Karki has been appointed as the acting Prime Minister of Nepal, with the vote being held using Discord. Karki (73 years old) is a former chief justice of Nepal and is also the country's first female PM and the first head of state to be appointed using Discord.

Additionally, Nepal's parliament has been dissolved and a general election will be held on March 5, 2026 to appoint a permanent PM. Karki was chosen because she was involved in several anti-corruption cases and also overthrew the monarchy in 1990 under the People's Revolution movement during her tenure of Chief Justice.

This is not the first time tech has affected politics

Sushila Karki's election as Nepal's acting PM is the second time modern technology has changed the world's political landscape. Earlier this week, Albania appointed an AI chatbot as a minister to fight corruption by awarding government contracts fairly without the worry of bribes or threats from humans.
