According to MSN, Netflix would introduce the ad-supported subscription tier in 15 more countries, namely Austria, Belgium, Colombia, Denmark, Indonesia, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, the Philippines, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, and Thailand, starting in 2027. So, what should you know about it?

Is this a regressive move from Netflix?

For your information, this is initially seen as a regressive plan due to displaying ads in the app, but it generated 2.5 times more revenue by 2024. At the Netflix Upfront event yesterday, they also revealed that this ad-supported plan has 250 million subscribers, up from the 190 million announced last November.

In Southeast Asia, only Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand will receive ad-supported plans. This is likely because their higher population and lower local currency values make regular subscription plans too expensive.

Moreover, the plan with ads displays 15-30 seconds of ads before and during the content being watched. On average, 5 minutes of ads will be shown for every 1 hour of content watched. Video quality is limited to 720P only, the download feature is not provided and not all Netflix content is accessible.
