Recently, Netflix announced a partnership with Microsoft to bring ad-supported subscription plans as part of its initiative to curb password sharing among users. Now, the popular streaming service is also doubling down against password sharing by charging an additional fee for subscribers that use their accounts outside of their primary household for over 2 weeks.
Currently being tested in South America, the new measure is in place in Argentina, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic. In these test areas, subscribers will have one primary ‘home’ where they can access Netflix across any devices in the home, as well as travel and use Netflix on laptops and mobile devices elsewhere.
However, according to the Netflix support page in Honduras, users will be prompted to pay an addtional fee of USD2.99 or ~RM13.33 per home each month for every account on a TV or TV-connected devices outside of their primary location. Moreover, the test will allow users to purchase additional ‘homes’ which they are able to choose to either add or skip to use the service on TV screens.
As it’s currently being tested only in the aforementioned countries, it is uncertain whether Netflix will be rolling out this measure to other regions. Well, let’s hope not as this sounds like a rather troublesome and restrictive measure for users.
