From time to time, we would read news about Netflix expanding its gaming portfolio here and there. However, it seems that the company is scaling back its mobile games catalogue by removing more than 20 titles, including acclaimed favourites like Hades, Monument Valley, and Before Your Eyes.

A Change in Strategy

To the uninitiated, Netflix Games was launched in 2021 and aimed to offer mobile games to subscribers with no ads or extra fees. However, the decision comes as part of the company’s broader shift in strategy to focus on curated, long-term gaming experiences tied more closely to its streaming content.

Despite the downsizing, Netflix isn’t backing away from gaming altogether. The company says over 90 titles remain in its lineup, and new games are on the horizon, such as those inspired by hit shows like Squid Game, The Dragon Prince, and Money Heist. Netflix also continues to explore cloud gaming and deeper console-style experiences.

What It Means for Netflix Gamers

While the removal of beloved indie hits may frustrate fans, this appears to be Netflix’s way of doubling down on original, exclusive titles that can stand out in a crowded mobile gaming market. But what is the long-term goal? The company may want to position Netflix Games as more than just a bonus feature, but as a compelling reason to stay subscribed.
