While the smartphone business has been rough for HTC, it's still a strong brand when it comes to the niche VR headset space. In fact, it would seem that the company is already developing its next VR headset. This is evident thanks to a new document filed to the US FCC.

HTC has submitted test reports to the FCC, as part of the requirements for products to pass regulations in the US. The document clearly shows that the product is a headset with the brand name 'Vive' with a model number of '2Q9R100'. While there are no details of the headset beyond that, it's quite likely that this is a brand new VR headset for the HTC Vive series.

So, what level is this headset going to be? Is it a flagship, mid-range, or entry-level product? Well, a variant of the enterprise-centric HTC Vive Focus was found on Geekbench last month. In the benchmark entry, you can see that the headset sports the Snapdragon XR2 chipset, which is a flagship chipset that provides 5G connectivity. It supports 8K video playback, HDR10+, and 3D spatial sound.

While this will still be a niche product, technology could advance enough to expand the applications available to VR in the future, so seeing new headsets can be exciting. Having said that, what's an application you would like to see in VR that would convince you to buy such a headset?
