So in just a few hours ago, Microsoft just dropped some news by introducing a new Surface Laptop using a brand new Windows 10 S operating system. As of at this moment, pre-orders for the laptop can be made today but only in the USA for $999 (around RM4300) for the Core i5 model as the starting price.

The Surface Laptop will come in two variants which are Core i5 and i7, with two memory options to both. The i5 model will have a 4GB RAM + 128GB SSD or 8GB RAM + 256GB SSD, while the Core i7 will have 8GB RAM + 256GB SSD or 16GB RAM + 512GB SSD. Both models are using 13.5-inch PixelSense display with 3:2 aspect ratio.

According to Panos Panay, Device Chief of Microsoft, he said that the Surface Laptop is the “thinnest LCD touch model ever created and put into a laptop". He also went on to say the device can last up to 14.5 hours and it’s integrated with vapor chambers inside to keep the laptop cool. A Surface Pen is also available.

As for the Windows 10 S, the reason why Microsoft went ahead to create that operating system is because to challenge the Chrome OS, simplifying low-end hardware and most importantly designed for the educational target segment. Speaking of education as the target, the goal of Windows 10 S is to have a variety of PC partners manufacturing laptops to run on this OS.

One of the features of the OS is the login process which takes 15 seconds for a student to enter for the first time, another notable feature is the preconfigured USB drive option, as the OS will “detect the key and customize all settings ready for a school.”
