In this latest WhatsApp beta news, WhatsApp is refining its username feature with a new privacy tool called the “username key.” This optional setting acts as a gatekeeper—users who enable it can require others to enter a unique code before messaging them via username, adding a protective layer against unsolicited chats.
From PIN to Key: A Rebrand with Purpose
Previously referred to as a “username PIN,” the feature has been rebranded to “username key” to better reflect its function. While the core idea remains the same, the update focuses on clarity and user understanding, especially for those concerned about privacy when using usernames instead of phone numbers.
Informational Banner to Guide Users

To ensure users are aware of the feature, WhatsApp will display a prominent banner in the Chats tab for anyone who has set a username but hasn’t enabled the key. This aims to educate users on how the feature works and why it matters.
Still in Development, But Coming Soon
The username key is not yet available for beta testing, but it’s actively being developed and expected to roll out in a future update. WhatsApp continues to invest in features that give users more control over their messaging experience.
With that said, it is probably going to take a while for this new feature to appear on WhatsApp on iOS and Android. Until then, stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
