While having WiFi is important to keep most devices connected to the internet, it can drain the battery of any devices that is connected to the local network. A new study and research from University of Washington may solve that problem however, as they have developed a new WiFi system dubbed Passive WiFi, which consumes about 10,000 times less power than conventional systems.

The team says that the new technology could result in new types of communications that couldn't be devised before because of the power requirements of current Wi-Fi systems. At the current moment it can go up to 11Mbps download speeds, but this is achieved at really low power consumption, so it should be perfect for systems that needs low power, but more range than a Bluetooth connection can provide.

The best part about this new system is that it is backward compatible with current WiFi systems, so any existing infrastructures can be used to connect with these new devices. We may see more power efficient wireless cards in the near future, so we may be surfing the net without incurring any big power consumption. Stay tuned to TechNave for more news and information.
