New patent suggests that future MacBooks may feature the iconic light-up Apple logo again

The iconic light-up Apple logo on the back of MacBooks may be making a comeback in the near future after its 7-year-long absence. This is following a successful patent application by the tech giant on the implementation of “Electronic Devices With Backlit Partial Mirror Structure” published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office last week.

The patent, which can be viewed here details various implementations of backlight illumination of a “logo or other structures in the device”. The patent by Apple further explains that the illumination may be provided with a backlit partially reflective mirror which gives the logo or structure a shiny appearance while blocking interior components from view.

At the same time, the partial transparency of the mirror allows backlight illumination from within the device to pass through the mirror. Moreover, one or more thin-film layers may be configured to provide the partially reflective mirror with desired visible light reflection spectrum.

Of course, do note that this is just a patent and like many other patents out there, it may not end up making its way to a final product. Personally, I do think that the light-up Apple logo on MacBooks looks sleek and wouldn’t mind it making a comeback.
