New software lets you use your Canon cameras as webcams

Everyone is talking about video calls these days and with our smartphones, it's so easy to do these calls. But what if you want to do it on your PC and don't have a webcam? It turns out that a new alternative is to have certain Canon cameras around. Yup, you can now use selected Canon cameras as webcams using a new Canon software.

Previously, this was only possible with a PC capture card and paid third-party software. But with the new software installed, you can just plug your Canon camera directly to a PC and use it as a webcam replacement. In other words, all you need is a supported Canon camera, a USB cable, and the new EOS Webcam Utility. With these three, you can use a Canon camera as a high-quality USB camera for video meetings.

The software is available only for computers running on 64-bit Windows 10 and should work for programs like Zoom, Skype, or Google Hangouts. It should also work with video streaming programs like OBS Studio too, though that hasn't been confirmed. The biggest advantage of using a Canon camera as your webcam is that you'll get much better video quality compared to generic webcams.

Currently, EOS Webcam is in beta so you may run into the occasional bugs or glitches. Canon also pointed out that the software will not be supported outside of the USA, but it should work fine regardless of which country you reside in. With that said, have you been able to give this a try yet? Let us know how it performs on our Facebook page and stay tuned to TechNave.com for more news.
