New study suggests we are beginning to write like ChatGPT

A recent study from UCLA reveals that artificial intelligence is not just changing how we work but also how we speak and write. According to the research, humans are increasingly mimicking the linguistic style of AI chatbots like ChatGPT, even without realising it.

Are humans adopting the AI style?

The study involved over 600 participants who were asked to rewrite sample sentences. Some participants were shown AI-generated examples beforehand, while others were not. Researchers then analysed the rewrites to see how closely they aligned with ChatGPT’s tone and phrasing.

The results were surprising: people tended to use more formal, polite, and structured language, which are hallmarks of how ChatGPT communicates. Even participants who weren’t directly exposed to AI examples displayed subtle shifts in their word choices and sentence construction, mirroring patterns commonly found in chatbot responses.

The Long-Term Impact of AI on Language

The study raises important questions about how AI tools are shaping our everyday communication. On the plus side, clearer and more respectful language could foster better online dialogue. However, it also sparks concern that human expression might become too uniform or robotic over time.

With AI-powered writing assistants becoming more common in emails, customer support, social media, and classrooms, their influence on how we communicate is growing. This trend could reshape not only digital conversations but also broader linguistic norms, potentially redefining whathumanlanguage sounds like in the AI era.

Does this matter?

Maybe this is still too early to tell since AI-powered writing assistants have only begun to surface more this year. After all, human writers have been using the em dash for a long time but perhaps just not many are using it today. But what do you think?
