Apple introduced MagSafe wireless charging with the release of the iPhone 12 series which utilises magnets to keep the charging puck in place. Now, the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) is set to adopt the same functionality as it has announced that the next-generation Qi2 wireless charging standard will be built on MagSafe charging technology supplied by Apple.

In a statement today, WPC said that Qi2 will incorporate a Magnetic Power Profile, meaning that devices that adopt Qi2 in the future will use the same magnetic technology that is available in MagSafe devices. It further asserted that Qi2's Magnetic Power Profile will ensure that phones and other battery-powered mobile products are perfectly aligned with chargers for improved energy efficiency and charging.

Furthermore, the consortium stressed that faster charging will be available for some devices and that Qi2 will lead to "significant future increases in wireless charging speeds". The new standard would also allow for new accessories that can't be charged using existing flat surface-to-flat surface devices. Qi2 standard will debut in late 2023 and will replace the existing Qi standard.
