Nintendo has confirmed that its hybrid gaming platform, the Switch, has officially overtaken the long-standing sales record previously held by the Nintendo DS. As of 31 December 2025, lifetime sales of the original Switch (including the standard, Lite, and OLED versions) reached about 155.37 million units, surpassing the DS’s lifetime total of approximately 154.02 million units. This milestone makes the Switch the top-selling piece of hardware in Nintendo’s history.
Strong Holiday Demand and Continued Console Momentum
Sales momentum during the holiday quarter helped push the Switch past its rival’s record. Over its lifetime, the system has also reached a cumulative 1.5 billion software sales, highlighting its enduring popularity across both hardware and game titles.
Despite this historic achievement for Nintendo, the Switch still trails PlayStation 2 in overall industry rankings, with Sony’s classic system having sold over 160 million units worldwide. Nintendo projects additional Switch sales through the remainder of its fiscal year, though analysts note that the PlayStation 2’s record may remain intact for the foreseeable future.
Switch 2 Performance and Broader Financial Impact
Nintendo’s newer platform, the Nintendo Switch 2, has made an impact since its June 2025 launch, selling millions of units and contributing to the company’s broader financial strength. Earnings reports released alongside the sales figures show notable increases in revenue and profit, driven in part by strong performance from both Switch generations and heavy demand for first-party titles.
