If you are a Nintendo fan, you would probably know that the 3DS console was discontinued in 2020. But it does not end there, Nintendo also announced that its Wii and 3DS servers are shutting down next April. That said, what should you know about it?
For your information, the Nintendo 3DS console was released back in 2010. Meanwhile, the Wii was released in 2012. Interestingly, the online features for the Wii U versions of Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon were unavailable from March to August 2023 due to “vulnerability related to online play.”
Perhaps, this was an early bell for the servers to be shut down altogether. Sure, the online features have returned now. But it’s not going to be for long. Notably, the only service that will still operate is the Pokemon Bank. In case you didn’t know, this is a cloud storage service that launched in 2013 with Pokémon X and Y.
As of early April 2024, online play and other functionality that uses online communication will end service for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software. Thank you very much for your continued support of our products.

Moreover, the SpotPass feature is going to be scrapped as well. However, you can still use the StreetPass links between 3DS consoles and family systems. The system will be usable even after the server shuts down, so that’s a neat consolation for the owners.
We have yet to confirm more details on this matter, and what it could mean for 3DS owners in Malaysia. Plus, the online services for the 3DS and Wii have already been discontinued back in 2014. Maybe, this is a goodbye to our childhood. Gone, but never forgotten.
